The Shaker is built around a part that is meant to be consumed. The corrugated scratching insert is the surface your cat destroys, and it lifts out and gets replaced while the solid wood frame stays. Most scratchers are thrown away whole when the cardboard gives out.
The frame doubles as a nest. Once the scratching is done, the recessed shape holds a curled cat with sides to lean into, so the object earns floor space twice over rather than sitting idle between scratching sessions.
Corrugated cardboard is what cats prefer for horizontal scratching. It gives under the claw and sheds in strips, which is far more satisfying than a rigid surface and is why cardboard scratchers get used daily where hard boards get ignored.
